Master in Architecture Final Thesis

Urban and architectural intervention on the Cebada´s Market square.

The current market is in a state of semi-abandonment which leads me to the rehabilitation of this as a multifunctional space, creating a continuous dialogue between the square of barley and the market. Thus becoming a center of activation of the urban grid when creating a transformable space that adapts to all situations that occur in the neighborhood. For this all the superfluous elements of the market are eliminated, keeping only the structural skeleton. Reusing this to implement a structural subsystem that allows the configuration of multifunctional spaces that are transformed at the speed of the changing events of the square. A heart that beats, evolves and transforms at the same pace as the neighborhood.

The renewed market becomes a node of activation and transformation of the neighborhood environment that lives and changes at the same speed as this one.

Context

Madrid is a superposition of events that shape the life of the urban fabric at both the municipal and neighborhood levels. These events are grouped and make use of urban voids, especially the squares. The current dimensions of the square of the barley constrain and do not allow the total expression of the activities and life that occurs in the neighborhood. Despite this, it is a place of opportunity to enhance all these situations. The Plaza de la Cebada is self-managed by neighborhood groups. This is located next to the Cebada market.
